Once upon a time..there was a time when saying “we need Jesus” sounded old-fashioned, even embarrassing.
It was something your grandmother might say while switching off the television. Something that belonged to another century, another pace of life, another kind of problem.
But look around. Really look. At the anger that arrives before breakfast. At the quiet despair hiding behind productivity. At the way we scroll endlessly yet feel more alone than ever. At how quickly we turn on one another, how easily we discard people once they no longer fit our narrative.
This is not strength.
We are tired, and pretending we are not.
We have tried everything else. Therapy language without healing. Politics without mercy. Technology without wisdom.
Self-belief without any real sense of who the self is meant to be. We talk constantly about mental health, yet the soul is starving and no one wants to name it.
Jesus is the food of the soul. Not a trend. He is not a mascot for the moral or a comfort blanket for the weak. He is a disruption. He always has been. Two thousand years ago, he didn’t arrive applauding the systems of his day. He didn’t flatter power. He didn’t tell people they were fine as they were and should simply carry on.
He told the truth.
That human beings are lost when they place themselves at the centre of everything. That forgiveness is not optional if we want to live. That you can gain the whole world and still lose your soul. That pride corrodes from the inside. That mercy matters more than being right.
We do not like hearing this. We never have.
So we replaced Jesus with substitutes. Identity. Ideology. Money. Desire. Control. And when those failed to carry the weight of our lives, we blamed each other instead.
Jesus helps a different way. Not where people pretend to be online, not where their CV says they are, not where their politics place them. Where they are when the noise dies down and the questions won’t go away. When the bravado slips. When the loneliness speaks.
Jesus does not begin with condemnation. He begins with honesty. “Follow me,” he says. Not “fix yourself first.” Not “prove you deserve this.” Just follow. Not an overnight fix. Step by step. Day by day.
That is why now matters.
Because we are standing in a moment where the cracks are no longer hidden. Families are strained. Communities are fragmented. Young people are anxious and older people feel discarded. We have information without wisdom and outrage without real reason.
We don’t need another motivation slogan. We don’t need another enemy to blame. We don’t need another app promising fulfilment in ten steps.
We need the humility to accept that we have been wrong about what saves us. We need humility. We need grace. We need something, or rather someone, bigger than ourselves.
But when everything else is stripped away, when the noise settles, when the world grows louder and emptier at the same time, Jesus remains constant. Not because society is collapsing, but because the human heart has not changed.
Now is the time not because the calendar says so, but because we have reached the end of pretending we don’t need him. Now is the time to stop posturing and start listening. To stop outsourcing meaning and take responsibility for our souls and lives.
We do not need Jesus because we are weak. We need Jesus because we are merely human.
And we always have.
